The Mortality Index
The Covid pandemic has me thinking about how we could rank social, political, and economic institutions on a mortality index. On one end of the scale would be institutions vigorously fighting for my life while on the other end would be institutions actively seeking to end it. This would obviously vary country to country, while within countries, factors like race, gender, and economic class would create variations among domestic inhabitants. I live a somewhat privileged life in the United States, but I think every institutions with which I interact varies between actively wanting me dead and complete indifference to my death. This is maybe unsurprising, but it's a hell of a reality to live.
